Dear Beer-lovers and Foodies,

Every now and then two great Melbourne institutions work together to organise a truly special event. One such event is fast approaching and I for one, can hardly wait. We will see Mountain Goat’s fine ales matched with dishes from the superb Court House Hotel in what perhaps can be best described as a ‘Pretty damn special Beer Dinner’. Dave (Goat co-founder) and Scott (Court House) will be there to mingle and talk beer and food too.

Tickets are limited so book by calling the Court House Hotel on 9329 5394. Tickets $70.

The Drunken Poet is great place to chill out and have a pint of tasty Mountain Goat goodness. Great people and live music playing most nights a week… Its at 65 Peel Street in West Melbourne right across the road from the Queen Victoria Markets… so when you are looking for a great local in which to kick back, just drop in as Siobhan and her friendly crew will pour you the most perfect pint you’ve ever seen… who knows… you may end up spouting poetry yourself?

I’d like to introduce you to Hayden. The H-Bomb, H, Haydcore, Aitchey, little baby Hayden. Haydcore is a 6ft 5, shaved headed teddy bear who happens to brew beer here at Goat. But I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about Hayden the Renaissance Man not Hayden the brewer.

The finely woven thread that makes up the rich tapestry of H is as complex as it is varied: he’s an ex-’Elite Junior Athlete’, impact vocalist, cook, family man, model, whisky enthusiast and puppet fanatic. He thinks as deeply about things as his beloved Barry Hall doesn’t.

Haydcore was, in his words, an ‘Elite Junior Athlete’ at school. He trained with the Colingwood development squad as a mobile ruckman who could run all day. Unfortunately for him (and all of us football fans) he was cruelled by injury and became just another injury prone big man. But we often like to sit around the mash tun during run-off and reminisce while he flips through old photos like the one of him running through the banner on his 50th game for the Bundoora Bunnies, or wielding the willow, front foot forward, perfectly balanced, cover-driving for four. He had it all.

He’s the impact vocalist in the Mountain Goat band - which is yet to hold a rehearsal or play a single song in anger (hell, we don’t even have a name), but his stage presence will be undeniable, believe me.

He bakes lemon tart for us all. He’s perfected, then re-perfected salt and pepper squid. He’s modelled on this very website, drinks beer, then whisky - in that order - and can speak at length and lucidly about both.

He throws his hands in the air in exasperation when none of us have heard of his favourite French puppet master (puppeteer?), sorry I’ve forgotten his name again.

And all this is merely the jumping off point for every single brew, each keg filled and each bottle capped when H is involved. You can just taste it can’t you?

She’s the latest brew to emerge from “the little tank”. The script here was to make a crisp Pale Ale for spring, then late hop the be-hesus out of her little cotton socks. And, well, her little cotton socks smell of fresh-cut grass, tropical fruit salad, some more grass and then some grassiness. Hey, it’s spring, right? We love the smell of grass in the spring, makes you wanna run through the sprinkler in yer undies…ok too much.

Maybe I stop talking now and just show you a photo.

Come in and try for yourself. We love her and we think you will, too.

Cheers,

I like to think I’m a pretty hard worker. In fact we all put in a solid effort here at the Goat, but there’s a few guys here that put us all to shame.

These guys work all day and night and we don’t even pay them. No. Its not some dodgy sweatshop Cam and Dave have got going. Its our yeast. And there’s billions of them, all working for free.

We just give them some sugars to eat, a few trace elements, somewhere warm to hang out and they do all the hard work for us. And the best bit is they’re happy to do it.

I was counting yeast cells under the microscope the other day and there staring back at me was a yeast cell ‘ smiley face’, which just proves they’re happy little Vegemites.

Well almost……

We have no idea what the street value of Hightail Ale is, but man, its going to plummet this week. The other day we sent a big pile of it to RRR for one of their radiothon events. Normal, run of the mill despatch of beer… Not so much.

About ten minutes after the beer left we got a call from the courier company (who will remain nameless) to say that …”um, well, err, how do I say this…the beer’s been stolen!”

The driver had parked the van, left it running, gone in to get directions and wham-o, van gone. 20 cases of beer. Gone. Fast thieves who like craft beer. Who’d have thunk.

So, please, if you know anything of the whereabouts of our beer, we’re offering a reward for its return - no questions asked.

If you’re offered cheap Hightail from the back of a van - don’t encourage these people, tell them to give it back to us.

When you next buy your six pack of Hightail, be sure of your sources. It could be hot.

“Mmmm lots of burnt,” says Cam.

Hayden’s just sitting, looking at her, imagining the possibilities.

The Bigfoot Stout has just stepped off the kegline, and we love her. She’s 8.5% alc/vol, rich, intense, black, dark chocolatey with a sweet, toffee/caramel/smokey/oaky finish. Phew!

She’s not for the faint-hearted, perfect for Melbourne in July, low on carbonation and big on love.

But all this not for long. We’ve got 10 kegs, only at the brewery, possible sneak previews tonight, and on for real this Friday.

Come and tell us what you think.

Love,
