For the last 5 years we’ve been lobbying the federal government for a fair go for small brewers. Before gst and other taxes, we have to pay
around $12 in excise straight to the government for every case of Hightail we make. We pay the same rate of excise on beer as the brewing giants in this country.
Interestingly, most of the
rest of the developed world has a sliding scale of excise tax for small brewers where they pay either nothing or a greatly reduced rate until they are financially sustainable and brewing good
quantities of beer. Makes sense to us. As a result, these countries have thriving microbrewery industries – often accounting for up to 5% of their respective markets. In Australia, small beer only
accounts for about 1% by volume.
So, what can you do to help? So glad you asked. We’ve set up a website called fairgocraftbeer.com.au. Here you can see all the microbrewers behind this push
for excise change and you can find out where to go to sign a petition to the government. You can even print and host a petition at your house if you like. Of course we’ve got a petition going here
at our bar.
Three Victorian microbreweries have ceased operations in the last 9 months – we don’t want to see any more fatalities because of an unfair tax.
